The Classic Honeycomb Trim panel is available
for 99-04 Mustangs and consists of 3-piece black panels.
Total time to do, about 4 hours
Ok first you'll need these items:
- The left honeycomb panel (get this at
any Ford dealer. It will be listed in their parts database in the trunk lid
section, keep bothering them for the exact number, it does exist, dont
be deterred by their ignorance).
- A piece of the same type of panel to fill in the GT part
- Dremel like tool
- Apoxy, RTV or any other plastic glue
- Tamaya or modeller's putty
- Fine sand paper
- NAPA paint adhesion
- SEM flat black vinyl paint
First cut an area around the GT part, I would leave the ridges of the honeycomb
intact around the cut area. I used a solder iron for this part.
With the dremel tool grind the plastic to the ridges area.
Take the piece of filler panel and grinder away to fill in the cut away protion.
(This will take the longest time)
After forcing both pieces together glue them with apoxy or anything else. Make
sure this stuff is straight cause it'll look bad if not.
Now you have some huge gaps between the
two pieces, here's where the putty comes in. Fill it in the best you can and
keep the shape of the ridges like so.
Use sand paper to shape the extra putty
down or take it off.
Now take the NAPPA plastic adhesion and put down 3 light coats, allow at least
30 minutes to dry.
Now take the SEM flat black vinyl paint and put down 5 light coats.
Now it looks freakin OEM!!!
This is only for those with free time and
patience. I would have rather had a custom panel made but I couldn't find anyone
(hint hint...anybody want to do this for a living).
You can now leave it as it is or put an
emblem there which is what I did.
