So you want a custom painted interior?
It's not as hard as you may think so check it out.
Gotta get the Materials Needed:
- Plastic cleaner: This can be anything from rubbing alcohol to adhesive remover.
- Plastic dye/paint: There are many brands out there but Ive had the best
luck with SEM brand and NAPA generic, all available at NAPA stores or the internet.
- Plastic primer: Listed as a separate material
because its just that imporant. - Plastic cleaner: Anything to restore moisture
in the plastic
Directions: (These directions will work
for soft and hard plastic, along with vinyl)
First and importantly clean the area you want to paint throughly, this is critical
for the next step.
-Then just as important apply the primer!
If you dont do this then youre wasting your time. Without the primer
the paint wont adhere properly to the plastic, which makes it very suseptible
to chipping, cracking and peeling off.
-When applying the primer or paint you
want to do it in extremly light coats, to where it barely registers at first,
this picture may help illustrate:
-Allow at least 5 minutes between each
coat and 24 hours to fully dry and adhere.
-The key here is to have patience, I
know its very tempting to apply gobs of paint and be done with it, but
that can lead to paint runs and discoloration which I learned the hard way.
-Now you can apply the plastic paint
color of your choice, remember light coats with 5 mintues between them and 24
hours to dry :)
-Now that everythings painted clean
the area with the plastic cleaner. This will restore the moisture in the plastic
and will minimize paint rub off.
Side note: In my experiences when the
painted plastic is very dry, as if it hasnt been cleaned in months, light
paint may rub off on sweaty skin. So just clean the painted plastic every two
or three weeks and youll be fine, but you should be doing that anyway
:P
-This is optional but I would highly
recommend adding clearcoat.
This should be available as a paint color and when applied will have your interior
shining!
-Now youre done, so make that baby
shine and show it off!
