How-To: Program a PATs Transponder key (96-98)

If you have a Mustang that's a 1996 model or newer, your car is equipped with keys that have computer chips inside them which communicate with your car's computer.

It is, therefore, very important that you always have a spare key because you can't just go down to the local hardware store to get an extra made!

I bought mine on e-bay for $14 bucks shipped; you can get them from Ford as well (for an arm and a leg). Once you have your uncut key in your hands, go down to your local hardware store. I went to Lowe's, they use lasers to cut the keys, so I figured this would be the most accurate for the price (which was free for me). The man behind the counter warned me that if the key would not work he could not replace it which is very important to remember because these keys are special and usually aren't kept in-stock in your everyday hardware store.
Do this at your own risk!
Once the key has been cut take it out to your stang and test the key by opening your driver side door.

If it works, the key has been successfully cut.

From here it gets a little fuzzy.
Other sites tell you that you're supposed to use two keys for steps (A) and (B), but because I only have one, I used the same key in steps (A) and (B). Maybe it will work for you, maybe it won't, but it's worth a shot right? If not, break the bank and take it to Ford.

Here's what you do:
A.) Put your main key in the ignition, and turn it to the "ON" position. Turn it off, and take it out.

B.) Put the main key into the ignition once more, and turn it to the "ON" position. Turn it off, and take it out.

C.) Put the newly cut key in the ignition, and turn it to the "ON" position. Leave it here for a few moments. Some people say to leave it in for a minute, I left mine in for 10 seconds or so, started it up, and it worked.

Note that while at the Lowe's I tried putting the key in and turning it and it wouldn't turn. When I got home and attempted to do step (C), it wouldn't turn at first. I waited a few seconds, pushed in as I turned, and it worked. It's worked ever since for me.
