Well, I'm back again with another article.
This time we are going to talk about EXHAUST! Let's start with the HEADERS!
As most of you know, an engine will produce all of its capable power in its
POWER STROKE (go figure). As the fuel and air mixture burns, it expands and
pushes the piston down, which generates POWER! This is the most important stroke
of the 4-stroke cycle! The other 3 strokes are just the build-up for the power
stroke. If these 3 strokes take up more power than necessary, then they will
drain the power on the motor.
During the exhaust stroke, the stroke
that pushes out the burn air and fuel, a good way for your motor to loose power
is going to be due to back- pressure! As the exhaust valve opens, the piston
will push the burn remains of the air and fuel into the EXHAUST MANIFOLD. As
it does, it will produce pressure in the manifold, which will push back on the
other exhaust blasts coming from the other exhaust valves. This pressure makes
it harder for your motor to push out the exhaust, which will cause your motor
to work a little harder. This pressure that builds up is called BACK PRESSURE!
So what do you do about this back pressure? Well, how about an EXHAUST HEADER?Instead
of having the same exit point that each port has to share, the exhaust header
allows each exhaust port to have its own doorway out! As these pipes come off
of each exhaust port, they meet finally at a collector. All of these pipes that
hit the collector are cut and bent to be the same length. This allows the exhaust
pulses to arrive individually and spaced out equally so that it eliminates the
back pressure you would have built up if you were to have a manifold!
