The Basics: Performance Chips

Ok here is the deal on the chips (it had to come up sooner or later):

I'm sure anyone who has done any kind of research on one kind of chip or another has come across the most common names; i.e. Diablo, FordChip etc. Now you can sit down with 10 different people and get 10 different opinions on every chip out there.

After sifting through the useless crap and doing alot of my own testing i have come to the following conclusions on this subject:

Diablo is alot like the Nike of the chip world. Its got the name and that itself sells millions of units for the company. That is not to say it is a bad product. One its selling points is its multi-burn capabilities. For example you could have a program burned for a N/A application, and with the flip of a switch you could have a program for a nitrous or blown application. Its performance is mediocre at best... so we will say that's a negative on Diablo.

The next chip i will discuss is the chip from Ford, or ingeniusly named "FordChip". (Wonder how long it took those boys to think that one up?) Anyway...

FordChip from my own experience is a technologically advanced unit as compared to its Diablo counterpart. The FordChip (FC), uses software that provides a more rounded base for a burn. It covers more facets of the ECC's capacity and therefore, a better burn. The downside (I hate being the pessimist here) is the absolutely HORRIBLE customer service that FC provides. You can understand waiting to some extent, but the people at the company simply do not care. It took those people 7 months to get a chip to me last year. No folks, that's not a typo, that is SEVEN months! Absolutely ridiculous. I was more impressed with the actual performance of the product but no one should be subjected to that degree of horrific customer service. So, out with FC.

Oh yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel! With all these chips you would think there just has to be at least ONE that is worth the time/money. Well, of course there is. May I present to you, the Superchip Custom Tuning Chips (or SCT chips).

SCT is the premier Ford tuners all working together to bring the most complete and performance oriented chip on the market. Now you don't have to just take my word for it. I would strongly reccomend checking out http://www.velocitymustangperformance.com and getting in touch with Justin. Through good communication he cant custom tailor a chip to your every need. These chips are the best of quality and VMP has them at a VERY reasonble price.

Alright now with all that being said about chips let me brush everyone up on a new technology:

The latest info from the guys at Fordchip...

Chip = plug in chip that plugs into the J-3 port on an EEC.

Flash = Reprogramming the EEC by rewriting the calibration file using a flashing device hooked to a laptop.

In most cases.....both can make the same changes. A chip will override whatever program is on the EEC. So....if you are flashed and then want to make changes.... A chip can be used for the changes. The EEC will still have the base flashed file but the chip will overridde it.

If you are looking for an alternative to your normal everyday chip, may want to look into this. What is above is all i know about flash.

Well I'm done preaching to the choir so boys I have provided you with the tools needed to obtain a quality chip.

Now go out and DO IT!
