Had a shop install my gears and the mechanic told me
"I had to go negative shims and still did not line them up perfectly"
I pulled my car out the way it went in fine thankfully. But do you guys think it was a bad set of gears? Or bad mechanic. He explained he was lining up the ring and pinion and even had to take off all the shims and he still could not get it perfect?

I normally entrust axle work to a pro. That report is indeed a little disconcerting. There is a very nice thread on corner-carvers.com that details what your mechanic should have done.

IMHO, drive it and be aware of any noises from the axle. In the next 100 miles (more/less") pop the cover off and see how the gears are wearing.

Or pay to have it done it again somewhere else.
