When ever i hit 2000 rpm in 3rd gear my engine gets a sweet sounding whine to it. sounds just like an eaton. unfortunately it is not, so that leads me to beleive it may be a gear grinding in my tranny. anyone else hear that? its been there for a while, and it shifts and drives smooth in that gear. just wondering about it.

is it from the engine or tranny, at the right amount of gas a CAI makes a whine. If its your tranny they all whine~ its just if you can hear it or not. Do you have an aftermarket shifter? Steedas are bad for making the noise noticable.

first of all CAI's dont make a whine, they whistle, but not only in 3rd gear...I would say you have a problem beginning in 3rd gear, might be the synchro going out, just keep an eye on it

My 3rd has had little whine ever since I got installed my Tri-ax over 2 1/2 years ago. Never got any louder so I don't worry about it.
I think ALL 5sp 3.8l stangs have a little whine in 3rd. Seems to be ALOT of threads on this and noone really has a solution. Well except putting a rubber gasket between the tranny and shifter so you insolate fromt he noise.
If it gets louder, then you might have a problem.

Mine does the same thing. It started making the noise after the dealership did some warranty transmission work (replaced fifth gear and syncros).

    I like it

seeing how you have a tri-ax, even with the gaskets, whine is normal, as long as it dosent get any louder, i wouldnt worry about it.

the Tri-ax is like a big ol' tuning fork and it transmits the whine of the tranmission perfectly, gaskets or not.

my MGW was about as quiet as the stock shifter, without rubber gaskets
