na, he's basically a good DJ.
It's not like what he does hasn't been done before, he just happens to be particularly good at it.

You should be listening to dubstep.

Meh, I don't really get that into it. I listen to it and have heard alot that I enjoy, but do not particularly get hyped about it as much as some people do. Plus, it can get super cheesy IMO.

It most definitely can get cheesy, but thats pretty much true of every single genre of electronic dance music, because nowadays EVERYONE is a producer and putting their **** out there.

To be honest, I never cared for mashups. I dont think they offer anything particularly new, and they never contribute any extra danceability to the component music. I think its worth more to creatively remix a non dance-track into a dance version than it is to just take the vocals from one over the melodies of the other. It gets especially grating to my ears when the vocals or melody of one of the components is sped up. It sounds like chipmunk music.

As impressive as the technical skills of GT are, I dont think they translate into dance floor power. His songs are extremely stuttery, change very quickly, and dont particularly flow. The aesthetic comes from the novelty of seeing how he stitches the songs together. Mashups are more or less the same as scratching: a display of technical prowess, but ultimately useless on the dance floor. Its always cool when a DJ can scratch really well and shows off for a bit, but it would clear the dancefloor if he did it all the time.

Given his impressive understanding of how music works, Im really surprised he hasnt moved on to remixing/producing (or if he has, I havent heard of it). Mashups are such a niche/novelty.
