New Engine 4.2l Upgrade 2000 Mustang Coupe

Captain Max Silver

Captain Max Silver
1999-early 2000 3.8 had external balance engines, with a counterwieght on the harmonic balancer, and a flywheel balanced for each motor.
It best to keep all three together.
Not sure about the 4.2, because it was never stock in a mustang. Sometimes flywheels can be put on different engines, like a 1967 289 I had, with a 11" 351 flywheel.
It was internally balanced, so I could use the 289 balancer.
I guess you have to buy all three pats from the same dealer, or if used, make sure all three came from the same engine.
I Had To Use 4.2L Flywheel And Harmonic Balancer Because They Are Different. 4.2L Internal Balance. Was To Bad Because I Have Several P/P And Stage 3 Clutch Assemblies. But They'll Find A Home.

Well While I'm Waiting For My Overflow Tank Thought I'd Get Going On My Hood. I Like The Hood Vents On 2015 GT And Think They Will LQQK Good On My 2000 Mustang. With All The Mods I've Made What's One More. The Color Is Just About Perfect And If I Can Cut It Out Right They Should Go Right On. What's The Worst That Can Happen, I But Another Hood? Anyway I Have It Marked Out And Will Cut The Vents Out As Soon As I'm Happy With The Measurements. Going To Use A Dremel Tool To Do The Cutting So I Have A Little More Control. And We'll See How It Goes. As Far As I Know No One Has Done This.

Got Vents As Good As I Could. Set Up Pads Under Hood And JB Welded Those Pads Cut Out From Fiberglass I Had From Cutting Holes For Vents And Let Setup Overnite. Taped Around Vents When In Place, Then Clamped It Down, Doing The Best I Could To Follow Conture Of Hood. Probably To Much Fiberglass 3 Levels All Bonded Let Set 36hr. Removed Clamps And Hood Scoop For Pressure Wash. Doesn't LQQK To Bad. Still Got Finish Work To Do. See How Close I Can Get It. Maybe Take To Shop And Have Hood Scoop Blended Into Hood.

Well It's Been A Bit Of Time Since Last Update On Hood. Lot Of Work But
Think It's Coming Out Well For A Rookie In Body Work Dept. Problem Is
Hood Vents Are Made Of PVC Type Material And Don't Like Being Sanded On!
fiber Glassed In On Engine Side, Cut Out Big Enough To Set In Place.
Once Set Used Red Lead To Fill In Gaps And Did A Lot Of Grinding With
Dremel Tool And Orbital Sander To Get As Good As I Could. Problem Is If
You Do Your Own Work You Have One Bitchy SOB Criticizing Your Work!
Since Every Time You LQQK Out Windshield You See Your Own Mistakes!!
(That Sucks) I Think It's Pretty Good Still Need Another Coat Of
Performance Red (ES) Code Found Great Match In A Bomb.

Had Some Problems Though, Took Her Out For A Shake Down And Put A Few Miles On New Engine, Started Off Great Up The Highway Put On 50 Miles Or So Took Home, Something Didn't Fell Right. Checked All Over No Leaks Sounded Good At Idle. But Didn't Rev Up Right. Took Out Next Day Just To Town And Back. Almost Into Town At Light Started To Go And Started Missing And Then Really Missing, Barely Got Back! What Happened Didn't Miss A Shift And Suck A Valve, Wasn't Pushing. Check Codes Got P0412,P0340 And P1635 This Makes No Sense. Don't Have Things Like That In Car, 2 Out Of 3 Anyway. Start Engine And See Sparks Coming From No.2 Plug Wire. Boot Is Cooked. Had Fiberglass Shields And Wrapped Exhaust Manifold But It Was Fried, Looked Further No.3 Boot Same Thing. OK New Wires Ordered MSD 8.5 They Came In A Week Latter, Install All Seam OK But Still Doesn't Want To Rev Right. Check Plugs E3 Plugs No.2 Looks Fouled Install A Bosh Platinum With 4 Electrodes I Used Before The E3's Felt Better But Still Not Right. Thought I Should Check Valvetrain Maybe Bent Push Rod. Checked Them And Reset Them Exhaust Valves Seemed A Little Tight Took Out A Shim On Each And Put All Back Together. All OK Ah Right - Wrong!! Got To Be Plugs Got To Be! Ordered Set Of Bosh X2 Iridium Plugs. They Cam In, Installed And Guess What? Same BS So I Start Taking Plug Wires Off Accel Coil 1 Good 2NG Back On Barely Noticed Change Continued 3 Good 4 Good 5 NG Same As Number 2 Cylinder 6 Good. When Second Plug Came Up Bad On Other Bank Of Cylinders New It Wasn't A Head Gasket. (Got ARP Studs' In Those Heads Gasket Better Be Good) Got To Be Coil! Had A Old Coil That Was On Car 4 Years Ago When I Bought It Said What The Hell Give It A Shot. Bingo All Firing Revved Up Nice. Never Had An Accel Coil Go On Me Before 1st Time For Everything. Ordered MSD SUPER STREET Coil That's In Now. Maybe Now I Can Get Some Testing In!! Will Keep Posted!

Did you ever finish this? Been on the dyno? Does the 4.2 pan come close to the frame or steering?

As the first person to mass produce G10 phenolic spacers, I can say that the guy who quoted some bullshit Audi test to claim they don't reduce heat is full of crap. Aside from the touch test Six referred to, I posted temperature reading at idle and after hard driving obtained with a $2k heat gun. The temperature reduction is substantial, even more so if the EGR is deleted.

Do you know what let go in the motor?
Lack Of Oil Cylinders 1 And 4 Journals, Got Melling Pump In It And Still They Starved
Or I Was To Hi An RPM 6000+. Have Addressed Rod Issue (I HOPE) Cryo Froze My
Rods 300+ Below Zero And Have Install ARP Bolts In Them. Had To Ream Caps And
Tap Threaded End Of Rods. CAREFULLY!!!!!!!! Whole Process I Had To Develop To Do
This. Extreme Care MUST BE TAKEN!!! Can't Get Them To Hot, After Freezing in 1 Spot.
Heating Must Be Even Once Running In The Engine.
Trying To Figure Out How To Get A Bit More Volume Of Oil To Those 2 Rod Ends.
Working On It. Crank In Shop For Balancing, Hope Back By End Of This Week.
Pistons And Rods Balanced To 0.02 To 0.04grams That's 2 To 4 Tenths Of A Gram.
Machinist Told Me He Thinks He Can Get It Balanced To About 1Gram Out.
We'll See How This One Holds Together.

The stock oil pump pickup opening is too small to allow a high volume pump to draw in enough oil. May lead to starvation.

Thanks for the info. I'm using the stock oil pump hope I'll be ok. I have deleted the balancing shaft so that should send a little more oil to the mains and connecting rod. My mains and connecting rod tolerance are two to two and a half thousandths. On race engines you can go as high as 3 thousands. Would you happen to know what yours were?

I always run a high volume but modify the pickup. You cut away some of the tin that blocks the mesh screen. The larger opening allows the pump to be able to draw in more oil.

Those are good clearances. The 3.8SC motor I am currently building has 18's an the mains and I could only get 20's on the rods with an undersize bearing.
