New Pony needs a little work.

Hello, I am now a proud mustang owner and new to this forum. I traded my '96 chevy pickup off today on a '96 3.8 Mustang in Forest green with a T-5 and it's in excellent shape.

However I do have a few issues I need to sort out with this car.

#1. The odometer & Trip are not working. I have read somewhere that it might just need the gears replaced? How involved of a project is this?

#2. There is a very minute squealing noise when the clutch is not engaged. It sounds as if the cable might need adjustment or something but I really don't know. If I barely tap on the pedal the sound goes away.

#3. The fuel pump whines really loud.

#4. I have a CEL and it says it's a P0443 EVAP Canister Purge Control Solenoid or Valve Faulty.

2. Throw Out Bearing

3. Thats not good, how loud it really loud? pump might be on its last legs.

4. should have 4 o2 sensors, 2 pre-cat, 2 post-cat, the post-cat ones are for emissions monitoring only.

#4. How many oxygen sensors does this car have? I have a CEL and it says it's an o2 sensor, so I'll probably replace it/them soon.

#4, get the exact code or multiple codes and post them here and we can help you decode them. (i.e. p0174). the solution to many o2 sensor codes is something other than just replacing the sensor.

Welcome to 3.Hate
#3 My fuel pump has been whining loud since i got the car 4 years ago. I asked the exact same question and got the exact same response 4 years ago too.

OK, thank you all for the help on my questions.

As far as the throw out bearing goes how big of a problem is that? I don't think it's that because it only makes the sound when I'm off the pedal. If I touch the clutch (rhyme) ever so slightly in then the sound goes away. I was thinking maybe the cable needed adjusting if that's possible because the pedal sticks a little further out (toward the seat) then I think it should.

I took the car to autozone and they said it was a code related to the evap canister or the line running to it or something like that. I don't remember the exact code off of my head but I can post it later when I get home and find it.

The guy told me that it's whined ever since they put a new pump in. My old truck actually had a whine to the fuel pump on it and it lasted for years before going out. I guess some of them just do that due to a lack of quality control or something. Oh well, if it ain't broke...

The thow out bearing whining is a sign that its going out. Deal with as long as you want then have your clutch and bearing replaced. I have read that there is a way to grease the bearing itself without removing it.

Code could be a looses gas cap or a leak around the filler neck. We need the code itself to help more.

Screw the pump, if its working and the car runs ok.

Alot of the T5 sixers have a throwout bearing whine. And alot of the owner will not replace it and will live with the whine until work is needed on the tranny or clutch. Mine has been whining for 3 years now and it still works good. I just learned to leave a small pressur on the pedal when in neutral.
Also, the higher than normal pedal is typical. I think there was a thread on how to lower it but it is not worth it imho.

That's what she said
Okay, heres what you do.

1.) Dont even bother with the TOB squeeling.
They are NOTORIOUS for doing this, pretty much everybody has had a problem with it in there mid 90's stangs.
(I replaced my transmission AND clutch, and STILL got TOB squeeling a few months later! I didnt replace the tranny and clutch because of that noise, I replaced them because I forgot to keep fluid in the tranny!)
(But before that, I drove around for 3 or 4 YEARS with TOB squeeling...it DOES NOT effect the car at all.)

2.) Fuel pump whinning.....I wouldnt bother with it honestly.
I've had my mustang for 6 years and ALWAYS had a loud fuel pump.
Never replaced it, never had it die on me.
And im the kinda guy that drives on 1/4 tank to Empty ALL THE TIME LITERALLY.
(so I can honestly say whatever fuel pump my car has in it is strong as hell!)

3.) Odometer and Trip.......when I bought my stang, the mileage was inaccurate(the previous owner admitted it), he told me that he had the "speedometer cluster" replaced. Im not exactly sure what that is, nor do I know how to replace that......but that is one of your problems right there!
I'd take it to a shop and get her fixed, since it might be a mess.

4.) o2 sensors.......not sure, get it scanned at Autozone, they will give you a printout of the Code and Problem.
My car only has 2 o2 sensors, not sure about yours though.
(I had the Pre-Cats deleted, and had my exhaust system tampered with a million times, I lost count)

Congrats though, you got a good solid car.
Mustangs are loud as hell and always make weird noises!!
But they are strong too, and the v6's can take one HELL of a beating.
I've beat the dogshit out of my car for years and it STILL runs strong.
And they are EASY to work on......unlike Chevys.
(I had a 97 S-10 SS ZR2 once, and it was a complete nightmare to work on, and I traded it in.)

Thank you so much for your reply. I went to the local Ford dealer today and when I asked if I could get the gears for the speedo the parts guy told me I'd have to either take it out and show it to him so he can count the teeth on it or figure out my rear-end ratio. (I have no clue!) I'm a little bit leary about taking the cluster out but it looks easy enough I'll try it. I have no clue what the dealer will charger me for it but I'd rather them do it than anyone else. I'm also going to have them check out the emissions deal. It's nothing related to the 02 sensors but it is an evap purge fault. The car runs just fine and fuel economy has been pretty normal. (still better than my old truck)

I don't think I'll own another chevy after this. I've had 3 GM cars (had major problems with all of them) and I was a diehard GM guy but so far I've really been pleased with this mustang. If it holds up I might just be a convert.:D
