My friend has a 97 Cobra and he was driveing and his power steering stopped woking but when he gives it gas,it turns normal but as soon as the idel goes down,it gets really hard, like honda civic with no PS hard.We checked the fluid and its red like a rusty red color.

Dosent it suppose to be clear or did the cobras come with different PS fulid. Also, the PS its WAY past the max mark i mean its almost to the top.I suggest we go to an autoparts store and get regular PS fluid, drain his lod crap and put in the new stuff and full it to where it says max.

Im preety sure im rite but i just need some reasurance on this. Thanks it advanced guys.

he most likely has trans fluid in the reservoir, which is fine.

ford actually recomends automatic transmission fluid in your power steering system. look at a haynes or chiltons book it should tell you the same thing. as far as the steering he may need a new pump

fuel truck at work is doing the same thing, your getting air in the system somewere, his power steering lines go into the break boster, take a line fitting go around and tighten all fittings, then to bleed the system jack the front of the car up and turn steering wheel lock to lock.

tranny fluid is what your sopposed to use in ford cars.. dont drain it.
