In my opinion this is very trite and almost inconceivable.

One of my roommates was channel surfing and stopped on the History Channel and it was a show on going to Mars. They said it would take two years ship time to get to Mars. Two of my roommates said that they would rather spend two years in prison than spend it on a spaceship. This floored me. The argument, if you can use such a term, eventually degraded into the space ship being (somehow) punishment and other such nonsense. In any event the original dispute was that prison for two years was preferable to two years on a space ship headed to Mars. They expressed content for space programs calling them wastes of money.

What do you guys think? I can't help but be completely open in that I think that it was one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard but I wanted to know if this at all reflected the opinions of others, even if a sample as small as this board.

Prison. In space, if you dont work out everyday, your muscles start to deteriorate. At least in prison you dont have to worry about running out of air......just worry about not dropping the soap....

Grumpy, Human populations and technology grow at an exponential rate. Trust me soon we will need to colonize other planets.

I'd rather be on the spaceship. Maybe those who say jail are claustrophobic? Being on a little ship and not being able to move around much at all for years would be hell. At least in prison you can go in the yard and stuff. That's the only way I can see to spin this.

True but every time i looked out the window it would blow my mind and i would be pretty content with the bad living conditions and lack of "fresh air." Space > Prison any day

So you comment on that instead of what the thread is about. Genius, really.

In this case, prison. As much as I would enjoy going into space, I wouldn't want to go to Mars...It would take another 2 years to come back! If I went to prison, I would only be in for 2 years and could go about my life, without worrying about my muscles deteriorating, with more room to move around (i've heard spaceships can get pretty tight in some places) and less time separated from my friends/family.

Prison. I'm not much a fan of outer space, and have never fantasized about being an astronaut.

It's all fun and games until you are startled from your slumber by a floating bukkake surprise.

    No thanks.

That doesn't happen from not working out every day, in space. That occurs when you live in an environment with no gravity for a long period of time.

I would choose prison. I don't like the thought of being in a shuttle for 2 years, I'd go insane.

I'm relieved that there are so many people willing to climb into tin foil tubes loaded with tons of jet fuel and blast off into the most uninhabitable place in existence.

I'll take my LHC black holes, thanks. You guys go out there and live the event horizon dream.

EDIT: DO YOU SEE? DO YOU SEE?

Im voting prison, because despite living in a cell, in most cases you still have more things to keep you sane. More interaction, work, and less risk The only way I would pick space, would be if there was a final destination worth staying at.

It would be like living in a lava lamp eventually.

I would rather be on the spaceship.
