hey guys i am hearing a strange noise coming from rear end. To be more precise, its coming from the rear passenger side. It sounds like a rusty gate opening. Happens while taking off or driving in first gear. I thought it may be the rear end but that was changed out a few months back. Still makes the sound. Any ideas?

Based on the age of the car, have you changed out the U-joints lately? They do dry up over time. Another area to look at is the pads that the rear springs sit on and are located on top of the lower control arms. Over time, they wear out like the cartilage in a knee (bone on bone), or in the car, metal on metal.

I am assuming that prior to taking off, you just braked. I say that since if the rear caliper is sticking, you may need a new bracket as the noise may be coming from there.

It could definitely be u-joints. U-joints do tend to squeak in the early stages of going out. And usually at slow speeds.

if the noise is that kind of groan at the very beginning, sounds like a brake to me.

the rear caliper brackets will stick as I indicated earlier. the sound you seem to have, if I hear it right, sounds almost like mine after I have washed the car and the rotors had gotten wet and they kind of stick. if yours does it all the time, then the caliper may be sticking.

to help, go someplace where you can stop in the car without using the brakes. in other words, slow down until the car stops on it's own, then start off again. if the sound is still there, then less likely it is the brakes although it still could be if it stays stuck. at least you can check to see if the sound remains without taking anything apart.

I have a similar issue, but I have it down to two thing. Rear axle dampers. They look like horizontal shocks on the back. I figured that by accident. I was sitting on my trunk, before I got a spoiler, and when I jumped off, I heard the squeak. Then I tested it by pushing down on the back end over and over. The other thing it might be is part of the exhaust rubbing on something. (dual-exhaust, so it is pretty spread out on my car).
