Can someone give me a definitive answer on what the overdrive (5th) gear ratio is for the "V6 spec" T5? Everything I've seen published indicates that it should be a .73, but I've had two people tell me it's actually a .68, same as the "V8 spec" T5. What's the real deal - anyone know?

    Thanks,

    Brad

I can't remember when it changed from to .68 but it was somewhere in the mid to late 90's. If you have a 99+ though you have a .68 for sure. The only 5 speed mustang to get a different 5th gear from 99-04 was the Mach 1 with a .62 3650.

Where did you get your G-force and for how much? My 5th gear is nearly gone and I need to start looking into new options for stronger trannies.

Seems like we're all over the map here, let me try again. First off, I'm talking about stock T5's only. Secondly, without exception, every ID table I've ever seen indicates that the V6 spec T5 got a .73 5th gear. Here's a sample, but they're all the same: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index2.shtml

Are we saying that this table is wrong and none of the V6 spec T5's got a .73 5th gear as indicated?

    Ok guys.

    ALL v6 T-5's are a 3.35 1st gear and a .68 or .73 5th gear.

1983-1984 NON world class T-5's for V8 mustangs ALL had a 2.95 1st gear and a .68 5th gear ratio. This T-5 was rated at 265 lb ft of torque and used 70w gear oil for fluid.

    1985-1989 World Class T-5's for 5.0L v8's had a 3.35 1st gear and a .68 5th gear.

the 1985-1989 T-5 was also used in the SVO mustang with a 3.97 OR a 3.50 1st gear ratio. The 3.50 was only used in the SVO and only for one year. The 5th gear was a .79 ratio or a .78 ratio. This T-5 for the 4 bangers was rated at only 240 lb ft torque.

The 1990-1993 WC T-5's for V8's, and the "Cobra Spec" T-5 were a 3.35 ratio 1st gear and a .68 ratio 5th gear. The Regular WC v8 T-5 was rated at 300 lb ft torque and the "Cobra Spec" was rated at 310 lb ft torque. There was also a 1993 Cobra Spec cast off called the T-5Z Spec, which had a 2.95 1st gear and a .63 5th gear and was good up to 450 lb ft of torque.

    The 1994-1997 V6 Mustang T-5 is a 3.35 1st gear and a .73 5th gear ratio.

There is your T-5 tranny education kids

Actually no, my current T5 has a .78 overdrive gear, but that's besides the point.

Others have indicated that they've got a V6 spec T5 with a .73 5th. Interested to hear how to identify same.

It would help to know what year it is.

    Im thinking 99+

The only V6 T-5's with a .73 ratio are 94-97. So if you have one of those years, then you have the .73. If not then you have a .68

The only error i must correct are that ALL of the V6's have a .68 5th. Thats the V8 T-5's.

If your currect T-5 has a .78 5th gear then its from a SVO or other 4 banger rated at 240 lb ft torque or a custom job. Do you have it in an SN95 mustang or newer? If so, youl have needed to use a diff bellhousing setup then eh.

Okay, so it does seem that the charts are right and '94 - '97 (possibly '98) has a .73 overdrive. Thanks for correcting. Starting in '99, 5th gear went to .68 and the provision for the speedo cable went away, so these are of no use to me.

As for my T5 w/ .78 overdrive, it was originally in a '86 Mustang SVO (also found in '85.5 SVO), and due to the 3.50 1st gear, got a slightly increased torque rating of 250 lb/ft. It's in a Merkur today.

YES. you are correct. The 1998 DOES have a .73 5th gear ratio. Starting in 99 you are correct, the 5th gear went to a .68. This is why i thought you had a .68 5th because i thought you were a 99+. You have one of the odd ball T-5's with the 3.50 1st gear and .78 5th gears. They only put those in one year of the SVO, the 85 SVO and yes your right, they increased the torque limits for the turbo 4 banger.
